SESSION OVERVIEW:  WELLNESS IN SCHOOL PR: HOW, WHY & NOW

Does your school PR work feel heavier than it used to? It’s not just you. Our mission-driven, trauma-sensitive, consensus-building, high-performance, always-connected role puts our personal wellness at risk. Enter k12prWell, a national conversation built around keeping you at your best -- for your district, your loved ones, and yourself.

We will explore the known factors that increase -- and decrease -- our risk of occupational burnout, from the daily demands to working in a pandemic-driven world. It IS possible to work as a high-performance school PR athlete, without sacrificing the health and happiness that matter most in life.

Together we will use the four-step process (yes, RPIE!) to understand what's possible, explore strategies, and practice key conversations. And you’ll leave with a plan to work, live, and thrive in school PR.

    PRESENTERS:

    Kristin Magette, APR

    Magrette

Kristin Magette, APR, served as communications director for the Eudora, Kan., School District for 12 and a half years, and spent most of these years on the KanSPRA board, including a term as president and four years as treasurer. After publishing her book, Embracing Social Media, in 2014, she gained opportunities to speak nationally about social media strategy and leadership for schools. Even since leaving her school PR role in late 2018 to be a business development writer for an engineering firm, she remains committed to supporting the network of school PR leaders across North America.

    Shawn McKillop, APR

    McKillop

Shawn McKillop, APR, developed a passion for education when he served as communications advisor to the Minister of Education for the province of Ontario. Having since worked in school district communication for the Hamilton-Wentworth and Grand Erie District School Boards, he is now in his 14 year of school PR and serves HWDSB as manager of communications and community engagement. Shawn has provided strategic leadership for two award-winning campaigns supporting student mental health and well-being and is dedicated to continue collaborating with social workers to promote mental health and wellness for all.

In early 2018, Shawn and Kristin teamed up to create a coordinated discussion about workplace wellness within the demands of school PR. In the time since, k12prWell has become a widespread conversation about workplace wellness in school PR, including an e-mail distribution list with 200+ members, multiple NSPRA and state chapter workshops, and a record-setting #k12prChat on Twitter.
